Ode to the Lord of the harvest

by: Caroline Hand //// October 12, 2021

Lord of the harvest

Oh God, you make the wheat grow

You are the One who brings the rain

You water us all

You open up the floodgates

and close them

according to your will.

You are the Lord of the harvest.

You ripen things at the right time

and have them die when it’s time.

You lead all of creation in a joyous symphony.

Each season its own unique melody.

You are God of the seasons.

You tenderize the soil of our hearts

and make us ready to receive your word.

You plant hope inside of us

and watch it grow and grow.

You nourish us with attentive faithfulness.

You are sovereign over your harvest.

There is so much work to do in the fields of the earth

the wheat is ready.

Send out your skilled workers to tend to the fields,

Lord of the harvest.

Send us out

Send us out

Send me out

oh Lord of the harvest.

You are the One who separates the weeds from the wheat

On the threshing floor.

Where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Plant urgency inside of your workers,

oh Lord of the harvest.

At the end of times,

there will be a feast

A magnificent wedding banquet

and all your workers will celebrate

the Lord of the harvest.

Inspired by:

Matthew 9:37 Then [Jesus] said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Job 38:37 “Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot”

Romans 8:19 “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.”

Matthew 13:1-9 “Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a cropa hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Luke 13:27-28 But [the owner of the house] will reply, “I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!” There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.

Revelation 19:9 Then the angel said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’”
